Story: Trek @ Literary Yard Magazine

Story: Trek

By: Ramprasath
I never go alone anywhere.
But this one didn’t go as planned. Me and my friend were planning to go for a trek in Cherokee National Forest. But he turned down at the last moment. That left me to go on my own.
By noon I reached the top of the Cherokee mountains. Up at the top, it was a bit cold. On the way, I enjoyed every moment with the greens of the mountains. Of the many greens, American Basswood and Silverbell are my favorites. They are quite opposite. Have you seen American Basswood? It is the most favorite of bees. The bees extract nectar from its flowers. The wood is very lightweight and odorless. Pests like Japanese beetle are fond of these trees. Carolina Silverbell is another small one that is usually either rounded or pyramidal or vase-shaped. No pest show interest on this one.
A forest could have a lot of secrets. Have you heard of Cicadas? They are a kind of insects that appear once in either 13 or 17 years. Until that time they stay beneath the soil and wait for the right time. Researchers relate this phenomenon to Darwin’s survival. Pay attention to these numbers, 13 or 17. Do they ring a bell in you? Nah? They are prime numbers. It means a predator that might want to feed these Cicadas would have to appear in the exact same 13 or 17 years gap. Imagine what would happen to a predator if these insects were not available for 12 years? Food cycle of these predators would have to wait for 13 long years which is against nature’s design which allows the insect species to survive without a predator. Cool!!
Coming back to the story, by the time I touched the top, I had bothered my ankles a little too much. To my disappointment, I had already lost my phone signal. So I was thought to take some rest and continue my descent from the top. But moments later, I found the small lamps that were there to help the trekkers find way back to the foot of the mountains lost their breath. Suddenly clouds appeared from nowhere and the light from the sky dimmed.
Fear engulfed me instantly. With no light and no signal, I wondered what I could do if I was stuck on the way back. After resting a while, pain in my ankles didn’t seem to fall. I thought I made a mistake by resting a while. Had I continued to walk, I probably might have been halfway through on the way back to the bottom.
I realized I would not be able to walk immediately and that I might need long rest. I recalled my engineering classes in electricals and electronics. I thought if I worked on the lamp, it could buy me time till next morning so that I can walk down to the bottom in bright daylight. I worked on the lamp patiently. They at first flickered a lot. With more and more work, at one point, the filament gave up and the bulbs bursted.
There was only an hour left for me to run back to the foot of the trails. I took the map of the trails. There was a river that ended up into a falls that touched the foot of the trails. I got an idea instantly. I could yield myself to the stream of water and I could be easily taken to the foot of the mountain by the flowing water.
According to the map, an entry point to the river was not very far. I just had to leave the trail and climb down through the bushes for some 15 minutes. I wondered what kind of insects I might run over on the way. It was at first difficult with paining ankles but I was soon through. I saw the river and I could not hold. I immediately jumped into the water and with joy I let myself carried away with the stream. WIth one hell of a throw, the waterfall threw me at the foot of the mountain. I recollected myself from the water. At the shore, I saw a home. I badly wanted to get my clothes dried. I stood up from the water and approached the home. There seemed no one in the hall but the TV was running.
In the local channel, a lady in her mid-thirties was reading a local news.
“In a bizarre observation this noon, the lamps that guided trekkers at Cherokee mountain trail were seen flickering and eventually bursted. Some trekkers reported that they heard footsteps of some evil spirit through the bushes……..”
I no longer cared ever since this local channel ignored to telecast the murders of the two of us in Palestine war.

“Walter!”

Suzi almost yelled.

Walter who was digging soil using a shovel now turned to Suzi.

“What!”

“It is going to be night soon” Suzi said.

Walter looked up at the sky. The night was indeed falling. It was a wonderful sight to see the bright star EH2020 hiding behind the mountains.

“What would ‘good-night’ mean here in this new-found planet?” Walter asked.

Suzi thought for a second with one of her eye-brow shrunk a bit.

“A hostile planet showing its back to its host star!!” Suzi said.

“Poetic!!” Walter responded immediately.

The sun was seen slowly disappearing at the horizon. It was time for them to return to the habitation module and allow it to hibernate till next day morning.

In a few minutes the shovels were locked at its holders and astronauts Suzi and Walter were swallowed into the Habitation module. The Hab cleared any possible contamination and stabilized pressure before they could get themselves freed from the suits that they wore.

Walter turned the solar cells module on just so that the cells began to harness power from EH2020.

“I am tired” Suzi said.

“Me too. But do not forget to update your journals” Walter said before leaving to the cafeteria.

Suzi and Walter emptied another set of canned beef tongue, Riga bread and beet soup for dinner before going to bed.

“Do we have a plan for tomorrow?” Suzi asked.

“Well, I think we can kick off the soil test. We already have enough samples” Walter said.

“Poor planet”

“What!!”

“I am wondering what awaits for this planet in the future?”

That left Walter thinking for a few seconds.

“Considering the fact that there is no birth without a death, I think our encroachment on this big floating rock will be justified”

Suzi stared at Walter wondering what to make out of it.

“Good night Suzi”

“Good night Walter”

And the Hab’s light dimmed.

When the alarm woke up Suzi, she had a severe headache. The first thing that she noticed was the temperature of the Hab. The clock showed 6AM but through the window, she could make out that it was still dark outside.

Walter woke up being bothered by the unusual drop in temperature.

“What is it?” Suzi asked.

Walter looked around and checked the computer on the Hab metrics.

“We are losing power” Walter shouted.

“It should be morning by this time. Why is it still night?” Suzi asked thoroughly confused.

Walter looked at the computer and through the window alternatively.

As per the metrics, the temperature was constantly dropping. The Hab was struggling to maintain the temperature and pressure inside without much power left in the batteries. The solar cells were not deriving agitation as it was dark outside.

“It must be morning as per the clock and the cells must have begun to energize themselves by now but there is no sun out there?”

Walter nodded his head in agreement.

“What is happening? Where is EH2020? Have we lost the sun? Or Are our clocks wrong?” she asked.

“There can be only one possible explanation to this” Walter said.

“And that is?” Suzi asked impatiently.

Walter took a deep breath.

“The planet has been compromised. That’s all” Walter said as he looked out at the dark sky through the window.

State of Life In Literary Yard

State of Life

By: Ramprasath
“What have you done, Mark?” John’s voice was filled with anxiety.
“What?”
“He was one like you”
Mark grew impatient instantly.
“John, I had to worry about my safe return. Jonathan was already dead. There was no point in bringing his dead body back to the ship. Furthermore, we don’t have the necessary infrastructure to preserve a dead body on board. What do you think? Can we do space science in a graveyard?” Mark shrieked.
He saw John showing his frustration as he kicked on the floor. The ship – a big structure made of a combination of numerous metals like Aluminium, Kevlar – stood in space miles away from the planet Shelter, absorbed his kick and responded with no sign. On the monitor that received healthy signals from the surface of Shelter, the base camp that had Jonathan’s body was clearly seen. A Hab that swallowed millions and millions of money stood there in the surface of the planet with Jonathan’s corpse.
“Just download his medic data from his suit John and think about phrasing a meaningful sentence to frame this menace to Earth.” Mark added before he slipped away from John’s view of sight.
John downloaded Jonathan’s medic data from his suit. The data was clean. Infact it could never have been cleaner. There was no sign of forced death in the data. But the data clearly indicated that Jonathan was not breathing. The cardiac metrics part didn’t look good.

In the next several hours, they both were engaged in testing the samples taken from Shelter’s surface. Preliminary examination showed no new findings.
Shelter – a rocky surfaced planet was next in the list to explore chances for human inhabitation. Located in the region of goldilock zone around the Star S7, Shelter harnessed fresh oxygen and carbon-di-oxide in a proper mix and therefore had a very prominent layer of atmosphere. A solid rock layer appearing promising to offer a strong base. The rest are accurate Physics, Chemistry and Biology known to the human race. The planet seemed in its initial stages of developing organics. Ice on the surface gave enough hopes for water in the near future.
No wonder it became a victim to human encroachment.
Nature didn’t miss a chance of spreading its beautiful wings on Shelter.
“Mark!!”
Mark jerked a bit hearing John shouting out his name loud.
“What?” he attended John instantly.
“I am reading your report”
“And?”
“If this piece of cosmic rock is yet to pick on organics, How is it that my radar picks up heat signature from the surface?”
“Heat signature! ” Mark looked at the monitor. A red spot appeared amidst brown shades. It seemed to kind of move.
“Mark, I hope you didn’t park your shuttle on the top of a Volcano. The spot where your shuttle is, has been in our radar for more than a year now. There is no heat source. So What else it could be?” John said while mark was still staring at the monitor.

“If Jonathan is alive on Shelter, why is he not responding to our calls or messages? He knows the Hab in and out” Mark asked.
“But that man seems to be alive. Walking. Breathing.”
“That’s impossible”
“Possible. Quite possible”
“How?”
“What happened there Mark? A dead thing cannot emit heat. It is also not responding too. This whole thing contradicts to what you have written in this report. Now I doubt, the thing that took place between you and Jonathan, was a murder”
John pushed Mark’s report on the top towards Mark’s side.
“You think I lied?”
“I don’t know Mark. You have to tell me”
“I have told you the truth John. Jonathan is dead”
“I can’t telecast your report to Earth Mark. There are two other satellites that are staring at the same spot we are staring at. Jonathan’s body is walking on the surface of Shelter” John said.
Marked kept staring at the monitor that showed that red spot.

“What are our options?” Mark asked.
“We can’t affort another descent. It is costly interms of fuel. Furthermore we need approvals for that from the Base”
“That leaves us to?”
“Guesses. If we are able to figure out what that thing is ” John pointed his index finger at the red spot on the monitor.
“from here, that would be a blessing?”
“That is the base. There can not be a thing that can emit heat by itself. When I returned, I turned the hab’s power supply down”
“But this thing is moving”
John magnified on the monitor and Jonathan was seen walking on the surface of Shelter.
“That thing is definitely Jonathan. But why is he not trying to contact us?” John asked.
“To do that he has to put on the power supply” Mark responded.
“We can do that remotely from here” He added further.
“That serves no purpose Mark. He is not doing it. Why? Thats the question”
“Perhaps he lost his memory, John.”
“So he is just a piece of flesh and blood! Is that it?” John asked.
“Could be. I am just guessing” Mark said.
“How long has it been since you returned to the ship, Mark?”
“Two sol days”
“If he is alive, how is he able to be alive without food for two sol days?” John said.
“Which means, that thing doesn’t need food. But moves and don’t remember a thing all at the same time” He added further while Mark listened.
“That is evidence number one.” Mark said at a end of a little pause.
“For?”
“Jonathan’s death. If he was alive, he could not be doing this”
John nodded.
“So you are saying that a human body could move while being dead?” John asked.
“No. My question is, If a human body could move while being dead, what state of life could that be in?” Mark asked.

Highway (2014)

Highway (2014)

Contract criminals while on a routine burglary attempt abduct Veera - daughter of a rich businessman - as a bait for their escape. She initially tries to escape but comes back to them as she gets lost in a place where there is nowhere to go. The men lead by one by name Mahabir, take her along with them and she eventually finds her comfort zone in their company.

It was something that she never possessed but longed to possess. The men don't take advantage of her helplessness. On one dinner she recalls the way she was abused and molested by a family relative when she was 9 yrs old. Her mother on hearing from her own daughter about the molestation doesn't do much about it which pushes Veera to live with the molestations.

With those men running for their oxygen in a tempo, she feels the freedom that she always craved for. At some point, she admits that she neither wants to go to where they were going to nor returning back to her home.

At one point, she could not bear the pleasure of the unexpected chance of embracing what she always wanted to embrace. Mahabir, on the other hand, could not bear the agony of having gotten what he always longed for at the time when the policemen were in the lookout for his head. The world ends for Mahabir with one bullet piercing Mahabir's chest on the day next to the day he manages to get her a home at the top of a mountain.

Veera is sedated and taken back to her home. With continuous sedation by the time she gains conscious, Mahabir was long gone from the world. In the end, Veera peels off the real face of that relative who molested her and that of her mother who did nothing about it. She then leaves her home and no one follows her.

I find this film carrying dense emotions. This film criticises the nuances in the process of a rich getting richer. I think that's the best part of the movie. ARR music is so soothing. Not very great numbers which make you to listen to them often like the ones in Rangeela or Taal. But the background score in the film was too sensible. I loved this film personally.

Mission Impossible - Fallout

This film too has the same story-format as its predecessors. Tom Cruise - the most skilled IMF agent - therefore the best man to be the saver of the world.

The film is extravagant. No doubt about it. But while watching it kindled in me, philosophical thoughts instead of adrenaline-pumping action.

I thoroughly know, how challenging and difficult it is, to keep oneself energetic and continue to look young even at the age of 57. A perfect composure of discipline, hard work and continuous training can only return such wonderful amazing result. I would say, it is something very rare to find. Good things can only come with hard work.

One has to be surrounded by the right set of people. Tom Cruise has been fortunate to live amidst such right people.

That's the only way to get recognized quickly. But on the other hand, there are many that are hard-working but are not gifted with the right set of people. They are stuck with wrong people and are taken away much far from the level or position they truly deserve. What do their hard work, discipline, and training truly deserve? Peanuts?

That's pathetic.

Life becomes challenging because of such meaninglessness.

Twist @ Black Petals Magazine

Twist

by Ram Prasath

Sundar was a familiar name in many of the petty thefts in town.

Things became complicated for him when he tried his luck in the local jewelry shops. The jewelry shop owners secretly appointed two contract killers, Jagan and Kumar, to lift Sundar. A date was fixed.

Sundar was at a tea shop, reading a newspaper in the outskirts of town. Jagan and Kumar waited for him to step away from the tea-shop crowd.

A few moments later, Sundar, after paying for his tea, walked through a one-way lane into the bushes. Jagan and Kumar each retrieved a sharp knife from their trousers.

"Stick that thing in his throat. He can't shout," Kumar said.

"By height and weight, he looks much like you, man. Thick-boned. A hard push should do," Jagan murmured.

Sundar kept walking through the bushes. At some distance, the lane turned a bit. He went out of sight.

Jagan and Kumar approached him. At the turning, in the darkness, a swish of a knife was heard, followed by the chopping of flesh.

"Look at God's extraordinary creativity,” Jagan said. “You and Kumar are so much alike that I can trick everyone into believing you are dead, provided you and I share the gold that you picked." Jagan held the knife, dripping with blood, at Sundar's throat.

Kumar lay on the ground, in a pool of blood.

STORY: DOWRY

STORY: DOWRY

By: Ramprasath
dowry-prohibition-act
Maha alias Mahalakshmi was very determined to not entertain dowry in her marriage.
“Maha, we may have to be flexible when good profiles approach us ma” her father Natarajan tried to convince her.
“Dowry is a sin papa. This thing has screwed so many lives of innocent girls. This practice should be abolished. I am not here to support it at any cost.” Maha said firmly.
Maha had to skip so many profiles to stick back to her disinterest on Dowry. In the end she received two recommendations from the agent. Both were appealing by horoscope and other aspects.
That evening agent Sadhasivam visited Maha and Natarajan at their house.
“Guess we may have to loose both profiles” he said to Natarajan while Maha listened.
“Why? Are they expecting dowry?” Natarajan asked.
“If they asked, turn them down uncle” Maha intervened.
“No Maha. These guys are really good. They say no for dowry ever since I got their profiles.” Sadhasivam said.
“Then what is the problem? They like us and we like them. It is mutual now right?” Natarajan asked.
“Since they demand no dowry, there are many brides showing interest on them. So the competition is too heavy and many of those brides are more beautiful than our Maha” Sadhasivam said.
After a considerable long pause,
“If we offer them fifty sovereigns of gold, can we draw their attention to us?” Natarajan asked while Maha helplessly listened.

STORY: COPY-PASTE WORK

STORY: COPY-PASTE WORK

By: Ramprasath

Madan stood next to the great Indian actor Irfan Khan and this is not a filmfare award function stage but Madan’s personal computer. Madan adjusted brightness and contrast to balance the colors to make his morphed picture look real.
“Ofho Madan! Don’t you have any other work? Will you keep cutting and pasting photographs all day?” Madan’s mother Fathima shouted.
“This is graphics mom. Mark my words. I will become one like P.C.Sriram someday” Madan politely replied.
A year later,
“Ammee.. come na.. see this” Madan shouted from the hall.
Fathima appeared from the kitchen and saw the TV program.
In a star channel show, on a grand stage, Irfan Khan was handing over Filmfare award for best graphics work to Madan.
Fathima responded quickly.
“Dei, I have so much work to do in kitchen da. I don’t have time to see your cut-copy-paste work”
Thanks
