Haramkhor - Review

Haraamkhor, I would not say a class movie but can definitely say a movie taken in a class. Yes. The dull looking talented actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui's recent flick went on to theaters with a lot of criticism because of the story line of the movie.

Guess what! School teacher having an affair with his student!

Anti-social, definitely the movie is but I am wondering what might have made this talented actor to sign for this movie. I should say Siddiqui is fearless in accepting characters that come in his way and perhaps that is what he considers, his best. Badlapur was his first one that I happened to see sarcastically when I could not find any good movie to watch in that long boring in-flight from Germany to Atlanta by Lufthansa on a warm summer day. Initially, I just wanted to give it a try and honestly speaking it was Siddiqui's body language that drew me into the movie for the next few hours.

I remember once, in Kapil Sharma show, Shah Rukh Khan admitted Siddique's acting skills in front of so many people and that is not an easy recognition to get from Bollywood Baadshaah.

Haraamkhor is difficult to narrate and not that it should not be narrated at all.

In this existentialist world, these kind of stories are the flavors of reality and by that, Haraamkhor is just another story of the society that we belong to, undoubtedly. So we definitely have to digest it and perhaps should even take the time to assimilate it because it is in this society that all our loved ones are dwelling. Things like this happen a lot in cities and towns and most stories submerge like a submarine vessel under water but have their own place in the bunch of gossips that are left as a trail.

The film has been taken in such a way that, One cannot blame the teacher alone for the adultery. Enough rationale has been left in the film to let the viewer conclude that it was a perfect magnetism between the teacher and the student.

I would say, the word "Freedom" has been terribly misunderstood. Haraamkhor can be described as a film that is shedding light on the other side of those for whom, between freedom-with-responsibility and freedom-without-responsibility, it is the later that is easy to adapt. The Sandhya's father has another family which Sandhya gets to know at some point in time and that is when she begins to feel "left-behind". At this stage, she happens to see her teacher Shyam with a small boy and she purposefully tries to keep herself away from Shyam from then on. But she could not cut down his classes and the continuing negligence from his father continues to keep her within the reach of Shyam and the rest of the story becomes easily predictable.

Siddique is so natural at playing the role of a rural school teacher. Be it the scene when he stares at Sandhya who plays a video game while on their way to the town to meet a doctor or the scene when he, after having given up arguing with his wife goes back to Sandhya whom he had ignored on the way back from hospital, he is so casual at displaying a common poor school teacher's mentality.

The word freedom is just an illusion and so long as it remained an illusion, they both could cage themselves in their "whatsoever" love but once the freedom became unbounded from the illusion, the reality hits them so badly but unfortunately the movie ends up brutally there itself leaving enough clue to the viewer that the entire film was only filmed for financial benefits.

Towards the end,  not only they both paid their cost for the irresponsible-freedom that they enjoyed but also made their dependents pay an un-comparable price. The only difference was, it was Shyam's wife in Shyam's case and I don't have to tell you who would it be in the case of Sandhya.
